Looking to stay healthy around Dallas, PA?

We get it. The Back Mountain is a beautiful little secret of our region, with lots of places to eat and exercise.

Over the last few months, Catalyst Nutrition and Training has been covering how to stay healthy in the numerous cities and towns where our patients live. We’ve touched on Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Pittston, and now Dallas.

From cardio to strength training to nutritious food options, here are five ways to be healthy in Dallas, PA.

We mentioned Red Leaf Salad Company in our Wilkes-Barre blog post, but did you know there’s another location right here on Route 309?

The mission of the locally owned Red Leaf is to provide fast and healthy food options to the people of Northeastern Pennsylvania. And trust us: as dietitians, we can confirm it’s exceptionally healthy here!

All of Red Leaf’s salads can be made into wraps, so you can enjoy the Greek, Southwest, Taco, or Back Mountain Cobb salads exactly how you want them.

We strongly recommend checking out Red Leaf on 309 in Dallas if you want to go out to eat while maintaining that healthy lifestyle!

Maybe you love the Back Mountain. Maybe you love hiking the trails.

If so, why not check out the Back Mountain Trail?

This is a popular spot for getting in some quality cardio. The trail, a former railroad line, runs a little more than six miles from Dallas to Luzerne. It’s a wooded path that’s perfect for walking, running, and bicycling.

The Back Mountain Trail is open all year, so plan your hike around what you’d like to experience, from the changing leaves in fall to the lush greenery of summer.

You can access the trail from Luzerne and Trucksville. And don’t forget to bring the dog!

Up for some fine dining in a unique atmosphere? Head to the Greens at Irem Clubhouse on Ridgway Drive in Dallas.

This upscale restaurant is situated in the Irem Country Club and golf course, but the Greens is always open to the general public. This is the place to go in the Back Mountain if you’re looking to be treated well in a peaceful setting while enjoying healthy and well-prepared food options.

Lunch items include the colossal shrimp cocktail, chopped prime sirloin, and chicken Caesar wrap. Or head there for dinner to be wowed by the chicken breast or veal scallopini, rosemary-garlic roasted half chicken, or meatloaf with sweet tomato glaze.

Once again, speaking from personal experience, and as dietitians, we strongly recommend the Greens at Irem Clubhouse if you’re looking for high-quality food in a relaxing environment here in Dallas, PA.

Frances Slocum State Park is a favorite among NEPA residents. It’s located about five miles from Dallas, just off of Mt. Olivet Road in Wyoming.

What we love about Frances Slocum is the diversity of trails you’ll find there, depending on how you’re feeling and the type of challenge you want.

The Lake Shore Trail is always a go-to if you want to take in the pleasant lake views while you hike. There’s something special about being there early in the morning to watch the sunrise over the water.

The Frances Slocum Trail is another classic, as you pass by the park’s famous giant rock formation near the path.

If you’re looking for some more intense cardio, with a decent uphill trek, check out the Upper Deer Trail on the other side of the lake. It links up with the Hilltop Loop Trail that leads you out to Green Road.

The last item on our list of healthy places in Dallas, PA, is a stone-cold favorite of ours: Anytime Fitness, located right on Route 309. Legend says our founder, Brooke, has done more leg days here than there are days on the calendar.

Right from the start, there’s plenty to love about Anytime: it’s open 24 hours a day with 24-hour security and private showers. Joining the club also gives you access to all the Anytime Fitness locations around the world.

And what workout equipment will you find there? Say less. Here’s just some of what you’ll have access to:

  • Treadmills

  • Elliptical trainers

  • Exercise bikes

  • Stair climbers

  • Spin bikes

  • Squat racks

  • Dumbbells

  • Bumper plates

  • Barbells

  • Kettlebells

  • Medicine balls

  • Resistance bands

  • Foam rollers

Whether you actually live in Dallas or somewhere nearby, we recommend this Anytime location for its consistent quality and wide variety of equipment.
